countertops
EnviroGLAS Recycled Glass Countertops & Flooring
EnviroSLAB
Affordable and unique EnviroSLAB™ countertop slabs are custom manufactured with 100% recycled glass and/or porcelain and color-customizable epoxy resin in Garland, Texas (near Dallas) and are shipped to all fifty states and internationally.

Suitable for kitchens, bathrooms, or any other countertop application, EnviroSLAB countertops are 1” thick, 27” deep and 84" long (nominal), and can be cut to size.

A reputable local countertop fabricator will be able to complete the installation. The fabricator/installer will develop a schematic drawing of the finished project with measurements that will determine the number of slabs ordered. The fabricator can easily cut the polished slabs to size and then seam pieces together if necessary (1/32”inch) to fit just about any layout. The installer will also measure for and complete sink cut-outs and edge detailing. Schematics are available to assist in the installation.

EnviroSLAB is compatible with an under mounted sink, can be laminated for a virtually seamless look and can also be drilled to attach a table stand.

EnviroSLAB is a signature countertop that allows one to make an artistic and environmental statement. Still, many people inquire about how EnviroSLAB compares to granite. The short answer is: very favorably. The beauty and durability of granite and EnviroSLAB are comparable – both are stunning and will last the lifetime of a home or commercial building.

Yet many who are concerned about the natural environment appreciate that while granite must be taken from the earth, EnviroSLAB honors the earth by diverting trash from the landfill. EnviroGLAS also compares favorably to Zodiaq®, Corian®, Silestone®, IceStone® and Vetrazzo™.

Because it is non-porous, EnviroSLAB is highly resistant to common household stains (like wine, lemon juice, mustard, and vanilla) and can be cleaned easily by applying neutral cleaners and maintained by applying a professional grade marble/granite polish if desired. EnviroSLAB is heat and scratch resistant, but always use a cutting board under sharp objects and a heat-proof trivet under hot cookware. EnviroSLAB emits no VOC’s and does not require a seal.

Polished EnviroSLAB countertops are available in 22 standard EnviroRESIN colors. Choosing specialty glass, or clear or another custom color epoxy resin increases the cost. Requesting a custom size also increases the cost. Consult with your local product representative for pricing information.

In keeping with environmental stewardship, EnviroGLAS doesn’t produce catalogues or sample binders. Customers can browse a Sample Gallery of over 100 sample photos at www.enviroglasproducts.com and follow the directions to order a sample. EnviroSLAB orders usually arrive within 4-6 weeks.

EnviroPLANK
EnviroPLANK™ was designed to make the beauty of terrazzo flooring available to residential and small-format commercial customers. EnviroPLANK floor tiles are custom manufactured with 100% recycled glass and/or porcelain and color-customizable epoxy resin in Garland, Texas (near Dallas) and are shipped to all fifty states and internationally.

Sustainable and unique 6" x 36" x 3/8" (nominal) EnviroPLANKs are laid out in a staggered or random bond fashion with as little as a 1/32” seam, and so achieve a look similar to that of a wood floor. A reputable local tile installer or handy do-it-yourselfer will be able to complete the installation using a thin set mortar, epoxy grout and a wet saw with a diamond blade.

EnviroPLANK is a great application for foyers, kitchens, bathrooms (including showers) and laundry rooms and is compatible with radiant heating systems. It’s a great solution for pet owners and it can be used on walls and countertops as well.

Care and maintenance of EnviroPLANK flooring is cost-effective and simple -- a neutral cleaner and water keeps them looking great.

Because it is non-porous, this terrazzo material is highly resistant to common household stains (like wine, lemon juice, mustard, and vanilla). EnviroPLANK are extremely durable and scratch resistant, but always use caution when moving heavy objects across the floor. These beautiful floors will last the lifetime of a home or commercial building.

Polished EnviroPLANK tiles are available in 22 standard EnviroRESIN colors. Choosing specialty glass, or clear or another custom color epoxy resin increases the cost. Requesting a custom size also increases the cost.

In keeping with environmental stewardship, EnviroGLAS doesn’t produce catalogues or sample binders. Customers can browse a sample gallery of more than 100 sample photos at the EnviroGLAS website, www.enviroglasproducts.com and follow the directions to order a sample. Recycled Content Carpet
Everstrand Carpet
100% post-consumer carpet fiber made from recycled plastic bottles.
Nearly 3 billion bottles collected and recycled each year.
Almost 3 billion bottles are collected and made into EverStrand fiber every year. That's about 25% of the plastic beverage bottles collected in North America. EverStrand consumes zero virgin petrochemical resources because it's made entirely from PET (polyethylene terephthalate) - making it the most unique carpet fiber in the industry. Even the by-products of EverStrand's manufacturing process are made into other recycled content products; this way, no part of the bottle ends up in a landfill.

Higher quality from recycled fiber
EverStrand's recycled fiber is superior to lower grades of synthetic fibers used in other brands of carpet yarn. How is this possible with 100% recycled fiber? The U.S. Food and Drug Administration requires the use of top quality PET resins for the manufacture of food and beverage containers; when we reclaim these bottles, we're taking this same high-quality, food grade plastic and using it to make our EverStrand carpet fiber. So, in addition to helping the environment by using recycled bottles, we're actually making a higher quality product with the superior PET that comes from drink bottles.

Keeping over a billion pounds of plastic out of landfills
Since 1999 more than 17 billion bottles have been recycled to make Everstrand Carpet - keeping more than 1 billion pounds of plastic out of landfills.  Even the caps and labels from bottles are recycled, turning them into valuable nylon resins used in a variety of manufacturing applications.

Helping Improve Indoor Air Quality   (information provided by the Carpet & Rug Institute)
http://www.carpet-rug.org/residential-customers/selecting-the-right-carpet-or-rug/green-label.cfm
Carpet can be wrongly blamed for contributing to asthma and allergy and for emitting high levels of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Studies have shown that carpet is better at trapping allergens than hard surface, such as tile or hardwood, because carpet fibers catch particles and allergens that fall to floor. When allergens are trapped in the carpet, they cannot circulate in the air for you to breathe. Proper cleaning with a CRI-tested and approved vacuum effectively sucks up the dirt and dust from the carpet, locks it in the machine and keeps it out of the air.

New carpet may also have a “new carpet smell.”  Scientific studies show that new carpet is one of the lowest emitters of VOCs into the indoor environment. In fact, carpet emits less VOCs than other products such as paint.  Further, these emissions clear very quickly. The low-level VOC emissions and the harmless odor from new carpet dissipate within the first 48 to 72 hours after installation — even sooner with open windows or doors.

CRI offers Green Label and Green Label Plus testing and certification to indicate carpet, carpet backings, cushions and adhesives that emit low VOCs. In fact, Green Label carpet program has such a positive impact on the indoor environment that the American Lung Association approves its use in its Healthy Homes programs. Additionally, the Green Label Plus program tough standards exceeds the green building requirements dictated by California schools.

So if you are concerned about asthma, allergies or VOCs, be sure to ask about Green Label and Green Label Plus carpet, cushion and adhesive options.

The Safecoat® Difference

Many so-called "Zero VOC" products on the market reduce emissions that cause outdoor air pollution, but still contain a host of unregulated toxic ingredients (such as formaldehyde, ammonia, acetone, exempt solvents and odor masking agents) that cause indoor air pollution.

Safecoat® products go much further to protect your health. In addition to meeting the highest standards of environmental responsibility, we also eliminate toxic ingredients such as solvents, heavy metals, chemical residuals, formaldehyde and other harmful preservatives.

Our products are structured to literally create a "safe coat," with a unique molecular formulation designed to seal surfaces (from wood to metal to concrete, carpets, and much more), thus reducing "offgassing," or the emission of toxins into your environment.

We set the standard for protecting personal health through reduced toxicity. You can breathe easier with Safecoat® — because we take health seriously.

Why Wool?

Crush Resistance of Wool Carpets
The crush resistance of a carpet has many different aspects:
Pile fiber resilience or springiness
Resistance to compression or flattening
Recover from compression
Texture retention
Color change due to flattening

Wool carpets have excellent resistance to compression due to the physical nature of the fiber -- its natural crimp comes from millions of coiled molecules, as opposed to the artificially induced sinoidal waves in man-made fibers. The right balance between compressibility and resilience equals optimum comfort underfoot.

Wool's unique ability to absorb moisture means that pressure marks from furniture disappear completely when the fiber is gently moistened and allowed to recover naturally.

Wool's molecular nature, which features intermolecular chemical bonds, allows the fiber to be hot water, steam or chemically set into a predetermined configuration (e.g. a twisted yarn), which is then retained with great tenacity.

Wool is a naturally opaque fiber with a matte surface, so the effect of flattening wool pile on the color of a carpet is much less obvious than it would be with many other pile fiber types.

Insect-Resist Treatment
To prevent insect pest damage to wool carpets and rugs, wool pile yarns are given a durable insect-resist treatment during manufacture. When wall-to-wall wool carpets are not treated, they are subject to infestations of wool-eating insects in the home, which can lead to damage. Moths do not eat carpet; they lay eggs (larvae) that eat the carpet, which causes the damage

Insect-resist treated wool is harmless to humans and pets because only small amounts of the agents, with low mammalian toxicity, are applied by manufacturing processes. This not only enables complete penetration of the agent into the wool fibers, but also ensures that the treatment is resistant to carpet cleaning -- both vacuuming and wet cleaning.

Wool carpet manufacturers ensure the correct amount of agent is applied -- too much is unnecessary and wasteful, and too little would not adequately protect the carpet.

Even wool-eating insects cannot be harmed by mere contact with treated fiber -- they must eat and digest it before the agent takes effect.

Insect-resist treated wool carpets that comply with Wools of New Zealand standards do not constitute a risk to human health.

Wool Carpets and Fire
Wool carpets:
Are naturally flame retardant due to the high nitrogen content
Are difficult to ignite, due to a higher ignition temperature
Have a low flame spread
Have low heat release properties and low heat of combustion
Do not melt or drip
Form an insulating cool char and self-extinguish
Contribute less to smoke or toxic gas formation than other carpet pile fibers
Wool carpets are specified for those installations with the most stringent flammability regulations, such as on passenger aircraft and ships, casinos and hotels.

Wool Carpets and the Indoor Environment
Many materials used to furnish or decorate the inside of buildings emit small amounts of volatile products. The volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions from carpets are only a fraction of those emitted by other materials used in buildings.

With paints rated 100, relative emissions are:

Paints 100.0
Adhesives 72.5
Wallcoverings 8.3
Plywood 1.0
Carpeting 0.5
So-called new carpet odor is usually caused by minute but very odorous quantities of a by-product of the latex used in the back, 4-PCH, which is not harmful and will dissipate with good ventilation within days.

Moth resist agents used on wool carpets are increasingly applied using low (or zero) effluent techniques and, once applied, are totally safe to humans and pets.

Because wool carpets soil less rapidly than man-made fibers, the reduced use of cleaning chemicals makes a positive contribution to the environment.

Did you know...Wool actually assists in stabilizing the relative humidity in buildings by absorbing or releasing moisture during periods of high or low atmospheric humidity?

There are several gases produced by the burning of fossil fuels and by emissions from certain building components that pollute the indoor air. Among these gases are nitrous oxides, sulphur dioxide and formaldehyde. Scientific studies have shown that wool fibers absorb these gases, thereby purifying the indoor air and improving the health and well-being of building occupants. Wool chemically reacts with these gases, neutralizing and binding them irreversibly in structure.

Natural fiber backings, as in those made from jute or cotton, have a similar beneficial effect.

Nylon fibers have a much more limited ability to absorb these gases, having a much slower rate of absorption and being unable to reduce the final concentrations to the very low levels achieved by wool.

Heating of wool carpets -- as in by underfloor central heating -- does not cause significant quantities of the gases to be reemitted into the atmosphere.

Carpets and Allergic Reactions
Allergies are widespread in the developed world, and the incidence is increasing for two main reasons: a greatly increased number of synthetic substances produced and the improved diagnoses of allergic conditions.

Wool is a non-allergenic fiber that does not promote the growth of bacteria or dust mites, or give off harmful emissions.

Though carpets are often blamed for the incidence of allergic reactions, cumulative evidence now strongly suggests that carpets actually have a beneficial effect on people's health, provided of course that they are maintained regularly and appropriately.

Wool fibers are too long and too coarse to be inhaled and therefore do not affect asthma sufferers.
